Making Preparations For Your Camping Trip

When it comes to getting ready for your camping trip its always a good idea to put a list together you know if you don’t your going to forget something we all do. My objective here is to help you not forget the essentials, missing items can be the difference between a pleasant trip and a miserable trip.

#1 FOOD AND WATER

These of course are the main essentials just for survival we so these are on the top of the list. Now your going to want to make a list for that shopping trip, the best way I have found is to actually make a menu for everyday you are there breakfast ,lunch, and dinner. This way you can figure how much of each item you will need. Then it makes it easier to decide snack and any beverages you may want to add to that list.

#2 COOKING UTENSILS

You will need to figure in plates, cups, spoons, forks, knives (paper or plastic). A camping stove or a grill if you decide to cook over a fire. Maybe bring some plastic containers to store your extra food, frying pan or pot if you will need this for cooking and some non-melting utensils for cooking. You should put a little spice kit together that you keep with your camping gear since these things have a pretty long life.

#3 TENT

You will definitely want at least a tent its going to help protect you from the bugs and whatever weather conditions you may come across. If you don’t have one yet make sure you get on that has plenty of room for clothes and all the people sleeping in it and not to mention extra gear. Try not to have food stored in your tent if you can avoid it, just for the fact it can attract animals and you don’t want to wake up next to a furry buddy.

#4 SLEEPING GEAR

You will need a good sleeping bag, one that will keep you warm, sleeping mats will help insulate you from the ground, you can also use an air mattress or a foam mattress I like the foam mattress you don’t feel the rocks and it don’t leak air out it. Then if you want pillows and blankets put some thought into that also.

#5 LIGHTING

Lights are a necessity trust me when it gets dark in the mountains away from city lights you cant see a darn thing. So I suggest bringing a lantern when your sitting outside around the campfire and a good flashlight or a battery powered lantern for inside your tent and if you need to go to the bathroom that’s going to help you get around easier.

#6 TOOLS

Its good idea to have a good hatchet for splitting wood and chopping, Another tool would be a multi-tool it has a knife that is always handy and other tools like pliers and a saw that makes life a little easier.

#7 FIRST AID KIT

Always a good idea to have a good first aid kit with bandages, lotion for poison oak and bee stings, maybe some aspirin.

#8 MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS

Proper clothing for the season, some chairs , and even a table if you can scrounge one up.

Green Camping Tips

Getting out in the great outdoors, exploring the wilderness and terrain and relaxing in nature are what make a great camping trip. The government has taken steps to ensure that beautiful areas remain so through conservation and care. It is our jobs to take the same care when we are out camping, hiking and exploring this summer. We can all do this by being conscious of our impact as we camp and how we can reduce that impact to create a more green and sustainable camping trip.

Camping green really is not difficult. It just takes a little preparation. Let these prep tips guide you:

Reconsider the RV
RVs use an incredible amount of energy and fuel to run. For your next camping trip, consider packing up the car with a tent and sleeping bags. Big tents are cheaper and a lot more earth-friendly. The only think to consider with a tent is to take care not to pitch it outside of designated camping areas; this could disrupt wildlife and vegetation.

Use Reusable Equipment
Avoid purchasing packages of paper or Styrofoam plates and cups and plastic utensils. Instead, invest in sturdy plates, cups, and utensils that can be washed and used again. Also, consider replacing paper napkins with fabric napkins that can be easily rinsed and reused.

Conserve Where you Can
Get the biggest bang for your buck with LED lighting, which is the most efficient type of lighting that exists today. The bulbs in LEDs use up to 90% less energy. LED lights are brighter for a longer amount of time (up to 600 hours) than traditional flashlights, which drain batteries quickly.

Use Safe Products
When washing yourself or dishes while camping, it is important that the water you are rinsing away is not harmful. Find soaps that are biodegradable so that they are less likely to contaminate streams or harm animals that may drink from them. Where possible, use soaps at least 100-feet away from rivers, lakes, or streams.

Once you are out there, take precautions to ensure you not doing more harm than good. Here are some green tips for while you are camping:

Leave No Trace
Take care to take out everything you bring into your camping site. Don’t leave trash or equipment when you leave. Plan to bring bags that you can easily carry back out at the end of your trip. Don’t leave food or food scraps either as this can be dangerous for animals. Bury any human and pet waste thoroughly, including toilet paper.

Additionally, take care to avoid causing a wilderness fire. Create a contained fire pit with stones to help keep flames contained. Make sure your fire is completely out before leaving by covering it in water and scattering the cool ashes at the end of your camping trip.

Green camping is not complicated. It’s not even more expensive. It is just a shift in thinking from ‘anything goes’ to ‘what is the most eco-friendly option.’ Use this tips as a spring board for developing other green habits for you and your family to follow while on your camping vacations this summer.

Camping – A Checklist of Things to Bring

Before you head for the campsite, make sure you have everything you need to make your travel safe, comfortable and enjoyable. Remember that failing to plan is planning to fail. But what exactly will you bring? The answer lies in figuring out what kind of a camper you are, what your comfort level is, and what style of camp will you have. The complete gear you need covers basic fire building, cooking and dining, lighting and other miscellaneous items that you think you need.

Minimalist camping

These campers can do without a lot of comfort and equipment. They are willing to accept the wilderness as it is, adapting to the natural terrains and weather conditions. They prefer to sleep on the ground rather than lie on a camping cot. Their camp is sparse, creating fire rather than using a stove and lighting small candles rather than using a lantern. The minimalist really tries to experience the outdoors by choice.

In the campsite, if you need to gather some wood to build a fire, bring a small axe to split the logs. You can place your matches in a sealed container, or maybe you can carry butane lighter. Some campers bring dry logs if they are going out on a rain-soaked day.

For your hearty meals, there are a lot of easy-to-cook foods available. If you want to eat an elaborate meal however, then a more sophisticated camping stove (like those with several burners and adjustable flame) is required. Also, bring a cooler and ice packs to preserve your fresh food.

Be sure you have flashlights with extra batteries. One lantern or two will be enough to sufficiently light your camp. These lanterns can run on battery, propane or liquid fuel. Do not underestimate the value of lighting your camp at night especially if you have children with you. They will also be able to enjoy camping games with flashlights and glow sticks.

If you plan to do some hiking, you need a backpack, travel guide, compass, good shoes, extra socks, hat and a map. Don’t forget to bring along a multifunction knife, which can be an indispensable tool. The Different Types of Camping Lanterns

There are 4 different types of camping lanterns namely battery operated, liquid fueled, gas fueled and candle.

Battery operated camping lanterns are perhaps the best of the four because it is safe even for your children to use. The only problem is that when the battery power is running out, it won’t be able to be as bright that when it is fully charged even if it uses rechargeable battery.

So instead of bringing extra batteries, try buying ca camping lantern that can be charged with the help of the sun or the wind.

Next you have the liquid fueled camping lantern which unlike the battery operated camping lantern can be left running for the whole night. It does not only provide you light but it can also act as an as an insect repellent and depending on the type of candle you have, it is possible to have light for up to 9 hours before this has to be replaced with a new one.

The disadvantage of bringing this along is that it does not produce enough light for you to read if you have a hard time sleeping.

A Look at Liquid Fueled Camping Lanterns

Liquid fueled camping lanterns, also called Coleman Lanterns, are a popular choice among campers. They offer several advantages over other types of light sources. The biggest asset for these lanterns is the convenience of the liquid fuel. Most liquid fueled lanterns allows the use of multiple types, which makes finding fuel easy.

Kerosene is the easiest and cheapest fuel used. While this choice is the best bargain, it’s generally not the most popular because it has a strong smell and lets off a lot of smoke when burned. They also may not be the best option if you have children running around. The lanterns also let off a loud hissing sound, which could be found annoying. Others may find it an inoffensive white noise.
