Before you buy a camping lantern, you have to determine which type is right for you. You need to decide if you need maximum light or a light weight for easy carrying. Buy one that uses the same type of fuel to save space in your gear and so that you do not have to remember to bring two kinds of fuel. Some lanterns will burn more than one type of fuel. Fuel lanterns come in either a glass globe or metal mesh globe. The glass globes let more light through but they are also more fragile. The metal is more rugged but it blocks some of the light.
Do not forget to pack the accessories you need for the lantern. Bring mantles, fuel, bulbs and batteries if you need them. Your lantern is useless without the accessories you need to make it work. Only use battery or LED light lanterns inside of your tent; they produce less light but you do not have to worry about your lanterns setting your tent on fire.
